Boots Allen is the third generation of his family to guide the upper Snake. His grandfather rowed these braids, his father rowed them after him, and the river Boots floats today still holds a fish that swims nowhere else in the world: the Snake River fine spotted cutthroat, rising to a dry fly in water that comes cold and clear off the Tetons. Told from his seat at the oars, Iconic Rises is about what it means to grow up on one river and spend a life explaining it to other people.
That the fishery is still healthy is not an accident. Across the West, warming water, low flows, invasive species, and fishing pressure are grinding down wild trout. Here, fortunate geography and decades of unglamorous work have held the line: Friends of the Bridger Teton, Trout Unlimited, the Snake River Fund, Grand Teton National Park Foundation, Jackson Hole One Fly, and American Rivers. The film is a celebration of what they have protected and a warning against assuming it will protect itself.
